Brading Town Council created a 5 year traffic plan for Brading in the year 2000. Much of the work identified in this plan has now been completed. Major works were undertaken in the High Street, The Mall and Adgestone.
In 2005, Brading Town Council sent a traffic questionnaire to every household in the parish. The information from this and other consultation has formed the basis of Brading’s latest travel plan. A number of traffic improvements have or are soon to be undertaken in Brading as a result of your input into this latest plan. Consultation for an updated travel plan will soon be carried out so please take the time to complete any surveys that come through your door as you really can make a difference.

Brading High StreetThe High Street is a narrow street with narrow pavements, it was simply not built to accommodate the speeds and volumes of traffic it sees pass through it today. Residents were particularly concerned about the speed of the traffic using the road and the vulnerability of pedestrians using the pavements. The road is a 20mph zone but many people take no notice of this.
After discussions with architects and the Isle of Wight Council Urban Design Team, it was decided that a townscape project could be undertaken in the High Street to increase the perception that the road is extremely narrow and to encourage cars to slow down. Traditional flagstone paving has replaced the tarmac paving from Quay Lane through to the Bullring. This was funded partly from the Isle of Wight Council‘s Local Travel Plan budget and match funded with a Small Rural Towns Grant. You may have also noticed that all the road markings throughout the High Street have been repainted because of requests made in Brading’s Travel Plan.
MortonResidents of Morton expressed concern about the number of vehicles using Morton Old Road as a ‘rat run.’ After consultation with the Isle of Wight Council Highways Department, Isle of Wight Tourism, local businesses and local residents, it was decided that the best way to combat the rat running problem from Morton Road through Morton Old Road would be to make Morton Manor Road ‘No entry’ at the southern entrance.
Brading Town Council and County Councillor Patrick Joyce supported this no entry scheme. The Highways Department has now advertised this work and subject to approval by the Isle of Wight Council, Morton Manor Road will become no entry at the southern entrance.
YarbridgeThe traffic lights at Yarbridge have now been completely upgraded with a pedestrian phase added. Residents have wanted a pedestrian phase at this location for many years and because it was work identified in the previous traffic plan that had not been carried out, this was one of the Town Council’s priorities. We hope it will be well used! The new traffic lights are designed to reduce delays as they are sensitive to the amount of traffic waiting at each of the junctions.
The most significant changes from the Local Travel Plan have been outlined here. These are not the only changes that will be taking place throughout the parish in the near future. Many road signs and street name signs will be cleaned, repairs to a number of pavements will be undertaken and road markings will be repainted. A dropped kerb route has also be introduced from Morton through to Brading Town and 3 new bus shelters have been introduced. All of these improvements are taking place as a result of your input. Without the responses from the questionnaires Brading’s Traffic Plan would not have been produced, therefore Brading would not have got a share of the Isle of Wight Council’s ‘Local Travel Plan’ Budget.
